Huurre has always aimed high: as far back as 1983, a Huurre expedition took our flag to the North Pole. In 2008, Huurre supported the first Finnish expedition which reached the South Pole without outside support in December.
The journey of the first Finnish expedition through the world's coldest continent took 44 days. Kari Poppis Suomela and Pasi Ikonen skied unaided the full 1,130 kilometres, braving the icy cold and physical exhaustion in temperatures plummeting to as low as -30 degrees.
The journey was made even more difficult by a sledge weighing more than 120 kilos and a glacier up to 3,000 meters high. With the exception of some frostbite and cuts and bruises, the members of the expedition did not suffer any serious injuries.
This expedition to the South Pole means that Kari Poppis Suomela is the 12th person in the world to have skied to both poles without outside help.
The values of the expedition - safety, collaboration, the courage to take action and the will to succeed - apply equally well to the South Pole and the operations of Huurre.
